Vietnam is a country full of celebrations throughout the year. One of these celebrations that is widely observed every year is Tet Holiday.
Tet Holiday is the Vietnamese New Year’s celebration, which is a national tradition that is shared by every Vietnamese. Because of the importance of Tet Holiday, everybody must be well-prepared for it. Therefore, a typical Vietnamese family would make preparations one month in advance. They would clean up the house, get rid of the old things, bring home new things and display beautiful decorations and ornaments. Besides, they would make special meals that are only available during Tet Holiday. These meals are usually sticky rice cakes with pork and fat inside, pickles, stewed pork with eggs and many other dishes.
Family reunion is another reason that enhances the value of Tet Holiday. This is such a good occasion for family members to gather in one’s house. Hence, members of family, wherever they live, should return to their hometown on Tet Holiday. At the family meeting, they would sit around and tell each other what they have done so far during the last year. Moreover, they would enjoy delicious meals prepared by the women in the family and exchange good wishes. The elders often give lucky money to the young to wish them a new year of good luck and health. Besides, visiting the church or pagoda to pray for a happy and prosperous year is also a good and long-held tradition during Tet.
In sum, Tet holiday is such an important celebration that highlights several traditional values of Vietnamese culture.
